The KTP laser works on the principle of selective photothermolysis.
This means that the selected wavelength of laser light (532 nm) is highly absorbed by the target structure (chromophore) and less absorbed by surrounding tissue.
The skin chromophores targeted by the KTP laser are melanin (pigment) oxyhemoglobin (red blood cells) and red tattoo pigment, making it effective in treating pigmentation and vascular lesions.
When KTP laser light hits the skin, it is reflected, transmitted, or absorbed.
Absorbed light energy is converted to thermal energy (heat) by the intended targets (chromophores), thereby destroying the target cells.
V Laser is NOT suitable for individuals who meet one or more of these criteria:
The patient will wear protective goggles throughout the treatment. The treatment involves placing a handpiece against the skin surface and activating the laser. Many patients describe each pulse as feeling like the snapping of a rubber band against the skin.
Topical anesthetic or forced air cooling may be applied to the area, but it is not necessary if there is a cooling system.
Immediately following treatment, a cool pack may be applied to soothe the treated area.
For vascular lesions: 1-2 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart.
For pigmentation: 1-2 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart.
