Skin Layers Treated: The skin below the surface is made up of three important layers: the superficial dermis, the deep dermis, and the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer. The SMAS layer connects your skin to the muscle structure below and is an organized fibrous network composed of the platysma muscle, parotid fascia, and fibromuscular layer covering the cheek. The SMAS acts as a central tendon for the coordinated muscular contraction of the face and provides the functional role of movement for expression. This is the structure that is tightened in a surgical face lift procedure to lift the skin.

Aging Process: With aging, the building blocks of youthful, healthy skin are lost, including collagen, elastin, and extracellular matrices. The skin loses its strength and elasticity, leading to loose, sagging, and wrinkled skin. The Ultraformer targets these three vital layers (superficial and deep dermis and the SMAS layer) using precise micro-focused ultrasound energy, heating these layers to a critical 65-70 degrees Celsius. This temperature is required to contract collagen and induce a controlled thermal injury to the collagen fibrils, stimulating the long-term production of new, stronger collagen over time.
