The term “Mesotherapy” was introduced for the first time in 1958 by Dr. Michel Pistor. The mesoderm is the middle layer of the three germ layers in a developing fetus, which then goes on to develop into skin, blood vessels, tendons, and connective tissue. Mesotherapy means treatment to this mesoderm layer. In 1952, Dr. Pistor injected 10ml of procaine (local anesthetic) intravenously into an asthmatic cobbler to treat his asthma. His asthma did not improve, but his deafness improved significantly. Dr. Pistor then injected small doses of procaine around his ear at a depth of 3-5mm and found that local injections were more effective than oral or systemic administrations of the medications.

The Science

Today, Mesotherapy involves injections of various compounds, including plant extracts, growth factors, skin vitamins, and minerals, into the skin dermis. The method has evolved over the past decade to include various delivery techniques. The channels within the skin for delivery can be created using needles (traditional method), microneedles, nanoneedles, or non-laser thermo-mechanical methods. At The Marr Clinic, we use nanoneedles, which are very fine needles (finer than human hair), with a cocktail of active ingredients including hyaluronic acid, muscle relaxant agent, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), antioxidants, and multivitamins.

Mesotherapy is suitable for individuals looking for a quick skin boost with minimal downtime. It can be tailored for specific skin needs using different active ingredients.
