A chemical peel refers to the application of one or more chemicals to the skin which ‘burn’ off damaged cells. On a superficial level, it reduces textural irregularities and fine lines. In the deeper dermis layer, it encourages collagen production. The three principal types of chemical peels are alpha-hydroxy acid peels, trichloroacetic acid peels, and Jessner’s peel.
Jessner’s solution contains 12% each of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol. Salicylic acid is lipophilic, meaning it dissolves in oil, making it great for removing congested pores in acne-prone patients. Jessner’s solution induces superficial peeling of the skin and is used for reducing textural irregularities, fine lines, and wrinkles. In the deeper dermis layer, it encourages collagen production. Jessner’s peel is a mild to moderate form of peeling, and its strength can be increased by layering the applications, depending on the patient’s skin type, skin condition, and desired outcome.
Jessner Peel is NOT suitable for individuals who meet one or more of these criteria:
The skin is double cleansed with a gentle cleanser. The skin is then de-greased with an alcohol swab. Jessner’s peel is then applied using an applicator. Jessner’s solution is at a low pH, so it will sting a little but will not hurt. Throughout the peel application (10 to 20 mins), the patient may use a handheld fan onto their face to help reduce the sting.
2-4 weeks prior to having a Jessner’s peel, we recommend that the skin is primed with active ingredients like depigmentation agent like hydroquinone, exfoliating agents like BHA or AHA, vitamin A, and vitamin C. This is to reduce the risk of post-peel complications like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially with patients with darker skin types), maximize peel outcomes, and assist in speeding the healing time.
For the next 5-7 days, avoid the use of moisturizers or lotions containing active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acids, perfumes, and colors. Please use the moisturizer recommended to you for 3-7 days or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Thereafter, continue with your usual moisturizers unless advised otherwise. Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun, so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway! Apply foundation as you wish. Slight crusting and/or scabbing in particular areas may develop. If so, please do not rub or pick the skin as this may lead to a scar.
Removes thin lesions on the skin surface, reducing pigment and surface dryness.
2-6 treatments every 2-4 weeks.
