A chemical peel refers to the application of one or more chemicals to the skin which ‘burn’ off damaged cells. On a superficial level, it reduces textural irregularities and fine lines. In the deeper dermis layer, it encourages collagen production. The three principal types of chemical peels are alpha-hydroxy acid peels, trichloroacetic acid peels, and Jessner’s peel.

The Science

AHA solution contains up to 30% of glycolic/lactic acid mix. AHA solution induces superficial peeling of the skin and is used for reducing textural irregularities, fine lines, and wrinkles. In the deeper dermis layer, it encourages collagen production. AHA peel is ideal for patients who do not want any visible peeling and who are not ready for stronger peels like the Jessner peel or the TCA peel.

AHA Peel is NOT suitable for individuals who meet one or more of these criteria:

Common Expected Side Effects

Uncommon Side Effects:

The skin is double cleansed with a gentle cleanser. The skin is then de-greased with an alcohol swab. AHA peel is then applied using an applicator. AHA peel solution is at a low pH, so it will sting a little but will not hurt. Throughout the peel application (10 to 20 mins), the patient may use a handheld fan to help reduce the sting.

Pre-Procedure Care:

2-4 weeks prior to having an AHA peel, we recommend that the skin is primed with active ingredients like depigmentation agents such as hydroquinone, exfoliating agents like BHA or AHA, vitamin A, and vitamin C. This is to reduce the risk of post-peel complications like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially in patients with darker skin types), maximize peel outcomes, and assist in speeding the healing time.

Post-Procedure Care:

For the next 5-7 days, avoid the use of moisturizers or lotions containing active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acids, perfumes, and colors. Please use the moisturizer recommended to you for 3-7 days or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Thereafter, continue with your usual moisturizers unless advised otherwise. Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun, so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway! Apply foundation as you wish. Slight crusting and/or scabbing in particular areas may develop. If so, please do not rub or pick the skin as this may lead to a scar.
